09/05/10: 'Clear Moment' Remix competition

I'm making a remix pack for the track 'Clear Moment' from the new album 'Captured From Static' freely available. You can hear the original here: Clear Moment. Anyone is free to make a remix of this track in any style- I'm keen to get as wide a range as possible! I'll then choose my favourite remixes for an EP, hopefully to be released on the Sun Sea Sky label (provided I get enough suitable tracks). If you are interested, the details/ conditions and link to the remix pack are here: Northcape blog. Please put any completed remixes here- in 192kps mp3 please so that I don't use all of my webspace!
Send me your track
Deadline is 4th July for EP submissions. I'll keep everyone informed.

29/04/10: Sun Sea Sky website back up with FLAC downloads

13/04/10: Northcape 'Captured From Static' review in Redefine Magazine

Greg Healey's review of 'Captured From Static' has now been published in Redefine Magazine. Redefine focuses on independent music and has been running since 2004. Northcape scored an A-! You can read it here.

06/04/10: Captured From Static Album Released

The new album Captured From Static is released today by Sun Sea Sky Productions. The product of an extended period of work refining, developing and deepening the Northcape sound, the album spans a range of genres from IDM to ambient and emotions from upbeat to meditative. Inspired by travel, landscape and personal experience, Captured From Static contains 11 of Northcape's best tracks so far, chosen to form a coherent and evocative collection of music. Please check it out.

"This is an album of considerable beauty, an album that enchants and invites the listener to visit spaces of memory and imagination.
Northcape has indeed succeeded in producing one of those albums that comes along every once-in-a-while, one which both defines a genre and sets the standard for others to follow."

Greg Healey (Dandelion Radio / HealeyIsland)

Read the full review by Greg on the Sun Sea Sky release page. Stream the tracks at last.fm.

The album can be purchased as CD, FLAC or mp3 from the Sun Sea Sky website. The CD features artwork by Liam Frankland.
It is also available from leading digital retailers, including iTunes, eMusic, and Amazon.
If you enjoy the album please leave a comment on the album page (at Sun Sea Sky, iTunes, Amazon or elsewhere) and let others know! Your support is very much appreciated.

13/03/10: Moitessier + 2 remixes available NOW!!

It's been a bit of a wait, but the release of the new CD album "Captured From Static" from Sun Sea Sky Productions is planned for the 6th of April 2010!
Before the main album release, the final album version of "Moitessier" plus two exclusive remixes by Northcape is available now for mp3/ FLAC (lossless) download from the Sun Sea Sky Productions website. The single is an intriguing mix of blue-water ambient and electronica, with the remixes both standing alone as distinctive Northcape tracks and also expanding on different aspects of the original. "Moitessier" is inspired by the French yachtsman Bernhard Moitessier, who took part in the first solo, non-stop round-the-world yacht race in 1968, and the film "Deep Water" (which comes highly recommended if you haven't seen it). Moitessier abandoned the race to continue around the world a second time.
The single can be found here. Artwork is by Liam Frankland, mastering by Audible Oddities.

10/03/10: Northcape's music used in the promo video for the Hawaii International Film Festival

The film festival website can be found here: www.asiapacificfilms.com. The festival has been running for 30 years this year, showcases Asian and Pacific Island films and has up to 80,000 attendees each year. Thanks to Jay Hubert for the support!

13/02/10: Exclusive preview from new album on Dandelion Radio

Northcape is featured on Greg Healey's February show on Dandelion Radio. If you want to hear something from the new album before anyone else plus some other great independent music, tune in! Daily repeats, schedule is available on the Dandelion Radio website. Thanks to Greg for the support.

23/01/10: Free download scam

Marie (aka Pixieguts) has spotted a free download scam that several websites are running on direct download mp3 links. Example sites are bomb-mp3.com, beemp3.com, abmp3.com, mp3raid.com... and probably others. I really don't want my music 'harvested' without permission and commercially/ fraudulently exploited by other sites (Northcape gets none of the money that comes out of any 'sales' made on these sites- for example ringtone sales with very expensive hidden terms and conditions). I've decided to remove all direct download links both from the Northcape website and elsewhere on the internet. However I'm making sure that the tracks are still available! I'm slowly working through the website replacing all links with non-direct ones. Most free downloads will now be available through bandcamp.com at higher quality than previously. Pixieguts' blog about the mp3 download scam is here.

10/01/10: Happy New Year!

Thanks to everyone for your support over the last year. Hope 2010 brings better things!

I've set up a new blog where I'm putting all of the album reviews I'm doing or have done... now up, HealeyIsland and Voide, more soon! Please let me know any comments.

The new album will be out very soon. More news as soon as it's available. The single will be out even sooner, featuring 2 exlusive new remixes of 'Moitessier' by Northcape. Well worth getting, you won't find it anywhere else: http://www.sunseasky.com/releases/SSS038.html

10/12/09: Monotonik on hiatus

Simon Carless, the owner of the Monotonik netlabel, has just announced that the label has gone on possibly permanent hiatus. Monotonik is a classic IDM netlabel that has been going since 1996, and, as you are probably aware, they were the first label to release Northcape material. They've put out a lot of great music- this is sad news. Please show your support for the label here: Simon's blog

09/10/09: Northcape signed to Sun Sea Sky Productions

Some excellent news! I can now officially announce that the new album will be called 'Captured From Static' and will be released by US independent label Sun Sea Sky Productions in early 2010. Sun Sea Sky Productions has been going for almost 9 years and the current artist roster includes a range of brilliant electronic music/IDM from artists such as Boc Scadet and Boy Is Fiction. You can find them here: http://www.sunseasky.com. Previous releases include a range of genres from rock to ambient, a highlight for me so far being the ambient/post rock classic from Lights Out Asia, 'Garmonia'. I'm excited that Sun Sea Sky has offered to release the new album and believe that the current label aesthetic is a great fit with Northcape's music- thanks to them for the support! The album will be professionally mastered by Audible Oddities, who among other things have mastered a substantial part of the M3rck back catalogue including releases from Helios, Kettel, Proem, Sabi et al... You can hear unmastered versions of some of the tracks to appear on 'Captured From Static' here.

21/09/09: Star (Northcape/ Pixieguts)

'Star' is my first proper collaboration with Australian vocalist Pixieguts (aka Marie), although the second time I have worked with her vocals (the 'Pacific Highway' vocal mix can also be heard and downloaded here). I'm excited about the result, Marie's voice is of course fantastic but the vocal melody here is also superb, beautifully clear with a folky feel that really fits what I was trying to achieve with the music. The lyrics are based on a poem by Andrei Masliev.

You can hear and download the track for free here: Remix and collaboration page. Comments and support are of course much appreciated! If you want to hear more by Pixieguts, check out her webpage here. We have plans for future collaboration, so stay tuned!

12/08/09: Electrical Language

'Pacific Highway (Northcape Version feat Pixieguts)' has been featured and discussed on the latest Electrical Language podcast (http://www.electricallanguage.co.uk/). Its a great podcast, professionally presented and well worth a listen! Thanks to Dave Pearson for selecting my remix of Pixiegut's awesome Pacific Highway for the show.

02/07/09: Moitessier

A new track is now up! "Moitessier" will appear on the forthcoming album and can be found here.

It is inspired by the French yachtsman Bernhard Moitessier, who took part in the first solo, non-stop round-the-world yacht race in 1968, and the film 'Deep Water' (which is highly recommended if you haven't seen it). Moitessier abandoned the race to continue round the world a second time.

The samples in the track are all used under creative commons licence or in the public domain.

  • Vocal sample: Extract from 'Sailing Alone Around The World' by Joshua Slocum- read by Alan Chant @ librivox.org
  • Ship sound: Hello Flowers @ freesound.com
  • Halyard sound: P.Caeldries @ freesound.com
  • The track itself is a chilled, evocative combination of electronica and ambient, having sections of both, and aiming for a sense of smooth, continuous motion. Comments are as normal very welcome, and please join the mailing list if you want to hear about the album release.

A few examples are below, more are in the store...

A small proportion of each sale goes to NC to help support the music and the website, the rest goes to the retailer.

    14/05/09: Twitter

I've just got a new feed. Don't know how I'll use it, but I'll work that one out later! If you like to hear random two-line messages, it's here: http://twitter.com/northcape

    03/05/09: Two compilations

Various things have prevented me posting much recently, in particular I was in Italy for the last month! However the good news is that the album is nearly there, only one or two tracks short of complete. Northcape has also recently been included on a couple of compilations...

Firstly, 'Sunset Surf Chill', to be released on 14.05.2009 by Diventa Records in Germany. This is a warm summer beach chill-out compilation with vocal lounge and downtempo electronic tracks, I've listened already and its well worth the purchase. Thanks to Ulli from Sunburn in Cyprus (also appearing on the compilation) for setting this up!

Secondly, the 2nd Atom Sounds Compilation, including 13 tracks from a selection of artists from free netlabel Atom Sounds. You can get the CD from a range of places including Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com,Shockhound, Lala and Rhapsody. Karen from Atom Sounds has done a great deal to support my music over the years, and I'm very grateful to her for the continued support. Also check out her own music- Remergence.

10/03/09: Hosting problems- website finally back up!

Unfortunately my previous webhost (lycos) closed down. Even more unfortunately, their 'automatic' transfer to a new host turned out to be very manual indeed... Anyway, after 2 months of frustration and the site going down last week I've finally managed to transfer to a new host and the site is again up and running- I'm hoping it will be more reliable from now on!

03/01/09: Northcape voted artist of 2008 on Pixies Palace

Northcape has been voted "artist of the year" in the end-of-year vote at the Pixie's Palace group at last.fm. Pixie's palace is a popular and active music forum with over 400 members, including many independent artists spanning a wide range of genres. Thanks to Pixieguts (Marie) for organising the poll and to everyone who voted!

07/12/08: New website and new track!

Its taken quite a bit of work, but its now uploaded... I think the new website (hopefully) has a cleaner, more professional feel. It will still develop but the main structure's there now. Please comment and let me know what you think! Design is all by Northcape... Let me know if you have any browser-related problems- I've tried it out on the 4 browsers I've got available, but there are other versions... I've included a text-based menu at the bottom of every page if anyone has problems with the image-based one. There's also a new track up to celebrate the website 'opening'. You'll also find some new content in other places as well :-) 'Clear Moment' can be found here and is available for free download for mailing list members. Its a nice example of the more chilled-out side of Northcape and will definitely feature on the next album.

    Clear Moment

08/11/08: Northcape played by Mark Whitby on Dandelion radio

Northcape is currently being played on the November edition of Mark Whitby's show on Dandelion Radio, the internet radio station inspired by John Peel. The recent collaboration with Pixieguts, 'Pacific Highway' is being played alongside tracks by a wide range of signed and unsigned artists. Northcape track aside, the show is a great listen and highly recommended! It is repeated every day throughout November.

12/10/08: New track 'Approaching The Trig. Point'

Another new track just finished. This is hopefully destined for the next album. It's a slowly building track with a slight shoegaze influence. Hope you enjoy it- please let me know! (If you can't see it, try clearing your internet cache and reloading the page, I had this problem just now)

Thanks to Dave Watts on Morguefile.com for the amazing photo!
I expect the full-stop in the title is going to play havoc with the tagging of this track, but never mind ;-)

19/08/08: New vocal electronica track 'Pacific Highway' feat. Pixieguts

Its been a while, but there's some new Northcape material up here! This track is a remix of an original electronica track by Australian artist Pixieguts and UK electronica producer Dementio13. In fact this is more of a new version than a remix since the only part of the original track that was used is Pixieguts vocals, which are (as in all her music) superb. Vocals/ Lyrics - Pixieguts, Instrumental composition/ Production- Northcape. The quality of the vocals meant that inspiration came easily for the rest of the track and I think the result was worth the effort! This is also available for free download if you join the mailing list here and as normal comments are welcome!

01/08/08: Northcape featured in 'Computer Music' magazine

Northcape has been featured alongside other artists in a feature on lofi electronica in the latest issue of the UK music production magazine. You can read the interview below...

    26/05/08: Monotonik netlabel release [mtk202]

I'm pleased to announce that the 'Some Bright Valley EP' has now been released (for free download) by the Monotonik netlabel. Here's what it says on the release page:

A Monotonik debut for Brighton, UK-based electronic artist Northcape, then, with the sublimely mellow 'Some Bright Valley', all chilled-out strings and gently departing sunsets. Previously having debuted a couple of self-released albums, this first netlabel release starts out with the cutely meandering 'Red Panda', before moving on to the even more gorgeously pastoral, almost triphop-flecked 'A Part Of The Forest'. Also in there - 'Low Lying Mist' and EP closer 'On The Hill', which uses smart and beautiful repetition to make a chilled-out, signature Monotonik sound, awkward percussion making things all the better. Viva la Northcape!

Monotonik has been in existence for over 10 years, and is probably one of the most well-known labels for chilled IDM and electronica having released some of the best IDM producers from around the globe. So I'm happy Northcape is on there!

If you like this, also check out the remix EP Red Panda Remixed.

27/04/08: New track: Shinkansen To Kyoto

I spent some time in Japan last year and this is a track partially inspired by journeys made while I was there. It's warm, layered and evocative electronica that skims across the landscape, and can be streamed here, and downloaded free in high quality 256kps mp3 by mailing list members. Comments as always are welcomed!

I apologise for spelling 'Shinkansen' wrong the first time round!

    27/04/08: Red Panda Remixed

Following a delay (sorry about that), I'm very pleased to present the Red Panda Remixed EP, containing 5 very different but equally fascinating remixes of the Northcape track Red Panda. The original forms part of the free download Some Bright Valley EP.

The tracks on Red Panda Remixed are:

  • 1) Red Panda (Dementio13 Remix) by Dementio13
  • 2) Red Panda (4c3's Bamboo Night Remix) by 4c3
  • 3) Red Panda (The Peach Tree's Black Possum Mix) by The Peach Tree
  • 4) Red Panda (Dee Mond Remix) by Dee Mond
  • 5) Red Panda (Titee's Crazy Panda Remix) by Titee

The EP arose out of an open remix invitation in the Pixie's Palace group at last.fm, and the result is a great set of remixes from some very talented artists. I'd like to very sincerely thank all the remixers who have put their skill into this - it's greatly appreciated and the results are superb! I'd recommend listening to the EP in one go for the best contrast between the styles on display here. It's also available for free download. The mixes range in style from the warm, beautifully fractured IDM of Dementio13's remix, through the deep mellow electronica of 4c3's Bamboo night mix, The Peach Tree's punchy experimental techno, Dee Mond's soulful chillout mix to Titee's experimental elastic kaleidoscope.

    Hope you enjoy!

16/03/08: New online store page now up!

Finally, I've centralised the store links for all Northcape mp3s and CD releases in one place... You can now get all Northcape CDs and single releases here:store page

If you are considering getting hold of a copy of the latest album 'Detach', you may be interested to know that the mp3s are now also available from cdbaby.com in very high quality 200kps VPR mp3 (EDIT- good news- after some legal argument CDbaby have now reinstated this internationally- please use it!) 20/02/08: New track: Doesn't Feel Like A Long Way

This track was started over a year ago but only just finished. It's strongly inspired by personal experience, and I'm quite happy with the final result. Its relatively upbeat and melodic, and available for streaming and paid download here.

20/02/08: New exclusive download 'Tongariro' is now available for download by mailing list members only. It has been remixed to fix a sound I wasn't happy with...

06/01/08: All free Northcape mp3 downloads now in one place!

All you need to do is sign up for the Northcape mailing list to get access to a page containing all the free mp3s available from Northcape anywhere on the internet plus some exclusive downloads. You'll also be informed of any new Northcape releases. Hope you enjoy...

01/01/08: I'd like to wish everyone a happy and successful new year!

Thanks for all the great support I've had over the past year from people all over the world - it is very much appreciated. I'll keep working to improve the music!

16/11/07: A bit of a website update. Hopefully the new streaming players are a significant improvement.

03/11/07: I've been in Japan for a few months, so not much to write here... the positive news is I plan to get back to work on Northcape soon. So stay tuned...

21/07/07: new 'Outside' section added to the website

A new page has been added to the website to highlight issues I'm concerned about. The environment in particular is a common inspiration in Northcape's music so I wanted to use this page to support the many ongoing campaigns to reduce CO2 emissions.

15/07/07: 'Some Bright Valley' EP released

The new, free EP has now been released and is available here. It comprises 4 chilled atmospheric tracks.
If you enjoy the EP please let me know! Comments, reviews (and free publicity!) are very welcome.

21/01/07: New album "Detach" is now available!

Finally, the new Northcape album 'Detach' is available. It's been a while coming, as a lot of work has gone into all aspects from the music to the artwork (and this website!), but hopefully the end result is worth it. The album contains 14 of Northcape's best tracks so far, and I think extends the range of Northcape's released material while still hanging together well as a whole. To read reviews of the album, please go here and to hear some free streams, go here. You can buy the album here. It is available on cdbaby.com in the US and Sorry, link no longer valid in the EU, and will also be digitally downloadable on itunes and others.

If you buy this album and/ or want to support it, please leave reviews, ratings or feedback, particularly on the retailers sites- these will really help encourage others to buy the music!
